OPEN LETTER TO PM CAMERON - PROTEST AGAINST COMMENTS ON PAKISTAN
To Honorable David Cameron Aug 01 2010
10 Downing Street, London
Dear Prime Minister,
This is a letter of protest against the statement you made about Pakistan during your tour of India on 28th July 2010. In one of your speeches you accused Pakistan of “promoting the export of terror to India and Afghanistan". You also made this charge on behalf of USA implying that Britain does not have an independent foreign policy under the Conservative/Liberal government.
In view of the fact that Pakistan’s current government irresponsibly continues to fight UK & USA’s war of Terror, your remarks are considered very insensitive and it seems that your statement was clearly made to placate the Indian government based on Britain’s trade flows. This is very disappointing as there are 1m Pakistanis living in the UK, contributing to the UK economy and many of whom supported the Conservative / Liberal democrats in recent elections. Your remarks have incited an anti British feeling & the British Pakistanis feel let down by you.
You then continued to condole and mention the losses on the streets of Mumbai & London due to acts of terrorism however you conveniently overlooked the thousands who have been killed this year alone on the streets of Pakistan. Pakistani civilians and security forces are reeling from an onslaught of Terrorist bombings with 3,021 deaths in 2009, up 48% on the year before. This year on 28th May, there were 86 people killed in a suicide bomb alone.
Mr. Prime minister are you aware that there were no terrorist / suicide attacks in Pakistan before 2004 and no Pakistani was involved in the 9/11 event. In 2004, Gen Musharraf buckled under British and American pressure and started a war in Pakistan’s Northern areas. This led to Afghanistan’s war to spill into our borders. The deployment of Pakistani army against its own citizens has led to suicide bombings and the radicalization of youth in Pakistan against the West – this radicalization is also pervading the streets of the West. The US continues to use drone attacks (gross civil rights violation) which results in many civilians being killed. Pakistan seems to be heading towards a civil war, which will not be beneficial for the West or for its neighbors. You also overlooked the atrocities being committed by the Indian government in the Indian occupied Kashmir.
Although Pakistan’s government has been following the US & British ‘DO MORE’ policy, Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI is also being brandished as working with the Taliban (Wikileak). This statement is also being propagated by India on an ongoing basis.
Britain & USA have always supported military dictators instead of encouraging democracy in Pakistan. Today Gen Musharraf enjoys the hospitality of Britain however back home he is facing a number of charges.
We as British Pakistanis living in the UK are very concerned with your lack of political understanding about the situation in South East Asia & your open bias towards India. You have launched a one sided tirade on Pakistan without understanding the ground reality. You have overlooked the perilous condition that Pakistan is in today as a result of your war in Afghanistan which continues to destabilize Pakistan.
